How much weight can I put in a skip?

How much weight can I put in a skip?

Whether you’re hiring a skip in Preston or Chorley, there are certain factors that you need to be mindful of – including weight restrictions – and here at Preston Skips, we can guide and advise you.

A common misconception with skips is that they are suitable for all waste items and you can throw everything in them. This isn’t the case. All our skips come with a weight restriction to ensure that our fleet drivers can safely transport them once full.

Here’s a guide to give you a clear idea of how much weight our domestic skips can take:

  • 2-cubic yard mini skips

Looking to dispose of general waste that simply won’t fit in your wheelie bin? Our smallest domestic skips are ideal. Perfect for holding 15 to 20 bin bags of rubbish, mini skips give you more space to remove waste quickly and easily – and also reduce the need for tireless trips to the local tip. The 2-cubic yard mini skips are designed to hold 2 tonnes of waste safely.

  • 4-cubic yard midi skips

If you’re looking for skip hire in Chorley for a small to moderate project, you can’t go wrong with a midi skip. We recommend the 4-cubic yard skip for renovation and clearance projects that are expected to produce 30-40 bin bags of waste as they can hold up to 4 tonnes reliably.

  • 8-cubic yard maxi skips

Undertaking work on your garden in 2020? Why not opt for one of our maxi skips? They each come with a drop door that makes it easier for you to load with trees, soil and garden furniture – keeping the mess to an absolute minimum. The 8-cubic yard maxi skip is capable of holding 60-80 bin bags which is equivalent to 8 tonnes of waste.

  • 12-cubic yard open skips

12-cubic yard open skips are one the biggest domestic skips we provide and can fit 100-120 bin bags. Available for skip hire in Chorley, they are only suitable for lightweight materials, so please don’t be tempted to fill them entirely with soil, bricks, sand and rubble. To make sure our fleet driver can lift and transport them safely on the back of our fleet, we recommend no more than 8 tonnes for the 12-cubic yard skip.

  • 16-cubic yard open skips

These too aren’t suitable for heavy items. Suitable for 120-140 bin bags, the 16-cubic yard open skips offer sufficient disposal space and reduce the need for hiring multiple smaller skips. When loading with waste, please be mindful of what you’re throwing out. Try not to exceed 8 tonnes, otherwise it could compromise safety for you, our driver and passers-by.
